Safety from the Beginning Paints and varnishes are very important for child-proof toys. At an early age, children explore their environment with all their senses, and put everything - also their toys - into their mouths. Thus, one of the most frequently asked questions by responsible-minded parents is about the safety of the used paints and varnishes. For toy dealers, this is an important criterion for the selection of a good supplier. Our Paints - Safe According to the European Standard EN 71 All coloured wooden HEROS toys are subjected to a chemical saliva and fastness to perspiration test. In a damp and warm climate, chemical substances which are contained in human saliva and sweat, impact for a prolonged period of time on the coloured wooden surfaces. The colour must not run into the attached test strips when these are removed. In case of a mechanical impact on the coloured surface, e.g. in case of gnawing, nibbling, and scraping (e.g. during the growth of the teeth), it cannot be prevented that wooden toys show scratch and nibble marks, and that some paint particles are emitted. However, this is absolutely harmless because the paints we use are subjected to severe tests. The pigments used for all our wooden toy paints and varnishes remain clearly below the already very low limit values of the European standard EN 71, and can be qualified as heavy metal free. Every production lot is already tested in the paint factory, and certified to comply with the EN 71 standard. These paints are known as toy paints, and are absolutely harmless even if swallowed.
